Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius
Edward Elgar’s setting of St John Henry Newman’s religious poem, The Dream of Gerontius, was first performed exactly 125 years ago in Birmingham Town Hall. The St Andrews Chorus is delighted to be making its fifth visit in recent years to the Caird Hall to perform Elgar’s masterpiece together with the McPherson Singers and the River Tay Sinfonia. The performance will feature three of Scotland’s finest vocal soloists: Liam Forrest (tenor, Gerontius), Laura Margaret Smith (contralto, Angel), Jonathan May (bass, Priest/Angel of the Agony). It will be conducted by Michael Downes, who will also give a pre-performance talk in Marryat Hall at 6.45 p.m.
